Origin: It is the dried rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hortorum (Fam. Umbelliferae).

Traits:

Irregular knotty and fist-like, externally yellowish-brown, rough and shrunken. Texture compact, uneasily broken, fracture yellowish-white or grayish-yellow, cambium in an undulate ring. Odor, strongly aromatic; taste, bitter, pungent and slight numb then sweet.
